Community turns out for benefit held for couple

By Pam Hensley

Leicester – When the Leicester community comes together for one of their own, they do it right, and it was no different for a fundraiser held last Friday night (Nov 22nd). People waiting for parking spaces, cars parked on the road, people were standing just waiting for a seat to come open, so they could enjoy the barbecue and all the fixings that people so graciously fixed and served, all to benefit the Golden family.

Wayne Golden and his wife, Glenda.

The money being raised for Wayne and Glenda Golden will go a long way towards Glenda’s medical bills as well as groceries, gas and light bills, etc., said Eric Gaddy, just one of so many who organized and contributed to this event.

Gaddy said just the many trips back and forth to the doctors add up, and anything that can be done for the Goldens at this time of need, the community is glad to help. So many churches and businesses in the Leicester community (too many to list without leaving someone out) gave money and donated items to be auctioned during the benefit. Ed Johnson and Bruce Snelson were auctioneers who were present to auction off all the many items that were donated.

Randy Garrett, a long-time Leicester resident, stopped by and ordered six plates to go, to show his support for the Goldens. Garrett said Wayne had done some work for him at Blue Ridge Refrigeration and done such a job and was such a good man, that he was glad to do his part to help in any way for Wayne and his wife, Glenda.

Gordon Terry and some of his buddies played some bluegrass music for entertainment, while community members socialized and showed their support.

Being able to attend, and seeing the love and outpouring of support from the community, was such a blessing, according to Wayne, who was able to attend. “Just knowing that people cared and would go the extra mile for someone was just unbelievable.” Wayne wanted to let everyone know how much he appreciated everything that was done, and to keep those prayers coming for his precious wife and their family.

More than 600 people attended this benefit for the Goldens. Any donations for the Golden family can be made at any branch of TD Bank.
