North Carolina — The National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSS) has just released a study that reveals the safest cities in the country and in the state. The study was completed primarily to highlight the cities that have had the least amount of violent and non-violent crimes per population, while also bringing awareness to the cities that are more likely to have crime per capita.
North Carolina, for example, has crime rates that are over 10% higher than the national average, but fortunately, property crime rates that fall below the average. However, as the data shows, there are often vast differences from one city to the next.
You won’t find Weaverville or Woodfin on the list, but it’s not because of the crime rates. According to the NCHSS methodology of how the study was conducted, “A total of 7,639 cities were factored into this ranking with populations ranging from 7,639 to over four million.” So that eliminates Weaverville and Woodfin from the study as their population are below that level. The methodology also said they “…eliminated any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI and removed cities with populations under 10,000.”
So what are the safest cities in the state? The top 5 are Elon, Pinehurst, Holly Springs, Archdale, and Apex. Other notable cities to the area included Hendersonville which came in at 33 and Asheville which landed at the 55 spot.
These findings were achieved by examining data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting tool and combining it with internal population research. Additionally, while the study is replete with cities and data, the NCHSS has discarded two segments from the study: cities with a population under 10,000, and cities that failed to submit complete crime reports to the FBI. Nevertheless, one should find that most well-known cities have been included in the study.
