Buncombe County — The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office is alerting citizens to a new scam. “Over the past few days the Sheriff’s Office Communications’ Division has received an increasing number of phone calls from a subject presenting himself as Lt. Kevin Pryce with Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office,” says the press release from Public Information Officer Natalie Bailey. “This person states he is contacting those receiving calls to notify them that they have missed a court date, and have two ways of rectifying the matter; they can either get processed at the Buncombe County Detention Facility or pay a fine of $300 per missed court date.”
According to Bailey, several of the callers have said the number showing on caller ID is from Marion, NC. Callers have relayed to Communications that this person is very convincing. This is a scam; do not remit payment of any kind if contacted by this person.
The sheriff’s office is asking if you have any questions regarding any phone contact by subjects representing themselves to be with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office in reference to failing to appear for a court date, jury duty or any other matter related to the Criminal Justice System, please contact Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office Communications at 828-250-6670.
