Eighth grader a hit in baseball

This special to the Leader from Buncombe County Schools

EMS – We have an update on a talented baseball player who’s taking his skills far beyond Buncombe County Schools. Gio Llamas, an 8th-grader, this year at Clyde A. Erwin Middle and over the summer, he played in the USSSA All American Games in Florida and helped his team place third in the nation.

Then, over winter break, Gio was invited to play in California on the All-American Liberty team (During the All-American Tournaments). According to his mother, Gio competed alongside players from places like Australia and Hawaii. His team was undefeated all tournament and placed first!

“He played outfield to first and also pitched for them,” said Gio’s mom, Amayrani Padilla-Cortes. “The team went undefeated the whole tournament finishing 7-0. What makes it amazing is these kids had never seen or meet each other before the tournament and they came together to win it all!”
Gio will be trying out for Erwin Middle’s Baseball Team this year.

We think his chances of making the team are pretty good.
