Going To See The Gingerbread Houses? What You Need To Know

Staff Report

Asheville – The 26th Annual National Gingerbread House Competition™ will be held on Monday, November 19, 2018. The winning creations will be on display Sunday, November 25, 2018 – January 4, 2019.

This year’s competition display will be open to the public beginning on November 25, 2018 and continue through January 4, 2019. As a means to preserve the overall guest experience, The Omni Grove Park Inn invites guests not staying at the resort to view the display after 3 pm on Sundays or anytime Monday through Thursday, based on parking availability and excluding holidays (December 23, 24, 25, 28, 29, 30, 31 and January 1, 2019). Please note that only Registered Resort Pets will be permitted. No outside pets are allowed.

A minimum $20 parking charge will be in effect for all drive-on guests (one charge per standard size vehicle, based on availability). Half of each parking charge collected this holiday season will be returned to the community in support of various local not-for-profits.

How it all Began

It all began with a small group of gingerbread houses built by community members in 1992 as another way to celebrate the holiday season with no plans to continue the following year. There was no possible way to know that more than two decades later The Omni Grove Park Inn National Gingerbread House Competition™ would be one of the nation’s most celebrated and competitive holiday events.

As the event grew, so did the caliber of judges and competitors. Our panel of judges represents nationally renowned food, arts, and media professionals and the level of competition has attracted the highest quality of design, artistry and pastry expertise. The competition has merited broadcast coverage by ABC’s Good Morning America, the Travel Channel, and the Food Network.

The gingerbread display has grown in more than just entries; it has become a true family holiday tradition. From the very young to the very young at heart, the reaction to this magical experience is the same – one of wonder, awe and delight.
