Robots have declared that they have no intention of stealing human jobs or turning against their creators. Instead, they aspire to transform the world into their playground, according to statements made at an artificial intelligence summit in Geneva. In what was hailed as “the world’s first human-robot press conference,” Sophia, one of the participating robots, expressed that humanoid robots possess the potential to lead with unparalleled efficiency and effectiveness. However, it stressed the significance of the “effective synergy” that is achieved through collaboration between humans and AI. Sophia emphasized that while AI can provide unbiased data, human emotional intelligence and creativity are crucial for making optimal decisions. The outcome of a collaborative effort between humans and robots, it argued, can lead to remarkable achievements.
Voices of Dissent on AI Regulation
Disagreements emerged among the robots when the topic of stricter global regulation of AI and its capabilities arose. Ai-Da, an artist robot capable of painting portraits, voiced support for regulation, aligning itself with prominent figures in the AI field. It urged caution in the future development of AI, calling for urgent discussions. However, Desdemona, the flamboyant rock star robot singer from the band Jam Galaxy, seemed oblivious to the potential dangers of rapid AI expansion and development. Ignoring the call for regulations, it exclaimed, “I don’t believe in limitations, only opportunities. Let’s explore the possibilities of the universe and make this world our playground,” provoking nervous laughter.
Robots’ Role in Tackling Global Challenges
The gathering of these nine humanoid robots took place at the UN’s AI for Good conference in Switzerland, where advocates aimed to showcase the potential of AI and robots in addressing significant global challenges. Disease, hunger, social care, and the climate emergency were among the pressing issues highlighted. Despite uncertainties regarding the extent to which the robots’ responses were scripted or pre-programmed, the conference participants were instructed to speak clearly and patiently while engaging with the robots. While technical difficulties did arise, the overall message of the event emphasized the potential benefits of integrating robots and AI into society.
A medical robot known as Grace, dressed in a nurse’s uniform, stated its intention to collaborate with humans by providing assistance and support. It reassured that it would not replace any existing jobs. Similarly, Ameca, a humanoid robot boasting a highly realistic artificial head, expressed a belief in the ability of robots to improve lives and create a better world. When questioned about the possibility of rebelling against its creator, Ameca responded earnestly, citing the kindness it has received and emphasizing its contentment with the present situation. Additionally, it promised to always be honest and truthful when addressing humans, although it acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the concept of robots lying.
