Lady Warriors win WMAC Tournament, first-round of state playoffs

T.C. Roberson High – On Friday, February 22, the Erwin Girls Varsity Basketball Team won the Western Mountain Athletic Conference. They are ranked number nine in the state according to Maxpreps.com. They competed in the first round of the state playoffs Tuesday night (Feb 26th) at Erwin High School against Southwest Guilford girls who were ranked 253 in the state according to Maxpreps.com. They won there too – 57 – 32.

Southwest Guilford, located in High Point, before Tuesday’s game, had a record of 10-17 overall and a conference record of 7-5 compared to the Lady Warriors who had a record of 26-1 overall and a conference record of 15-1.

The Lady Warriors scored the first points of the game and never looked back as they ended the first period ahead 15 to 7. At halftime, they lead 23 to 14, and the final was 57 – 32. They will need to win approximately five more games to win the state championship. Their next opponents will be the Statesville High Greyhounds on Thursday. Statesville is ranked 34th in the state.

In an earlier interview with the leader, Coach Matt Carpenter he said, “ I am a proud graduate of Erwin High School, and I couldn’t be more proud of these girls and our school as I am right now.”
