Leicester man drowns

Leicester – A search for a Leicester man who went missing after he went under the water at Douglas Lake in Tennessee ended when his body was recovered. The man, Daryl Lee Smart of Leicester was only 50 years old. Sevier County Rescue Squads along with Jeff County Sheriff’s Department, EMS and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency searched for Smart until his body was found.


Smart was born on February 5, 1969 and was a son of Barbara Dorsey Smart and the late Freddie Joseph Smart. He was the owner of Smarts Recovery and a 1987 graduate of Clyde A. Erwin High School.

He loved spending time with his family and many friends. His greatest joy in life was time spent with Nathaniel, Sydnee, and Cooper. He also enjoyed riding his Harley and spending time at the lake. Daryl was known for his wonderful personality and will always be remembered for his one-of -a-kind laugh that would truly brighten your soul.

In addition to his mother, Daryl is survived by his sister, Tamara Brown (Chris); brother, Davey Smart (Shannon); son, Jordan Smart (Bethany); grandson, Cooper Smart; niece, Sydnee Brown; and nephew, Nathaniel Brown.

The funeral service for Smart was held on Wednesday at the Patton Ave. Chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Revs. Keith Watkins, Tom Dorsey and Jon Dorsey officiated. Interment followed at New Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.
