By Chad Nesbitt
Leicester – Coty Surrett, 30, of Leicester, has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, attempted second-degree forcible sex offense, attempted second-degree forcible rape and sexual battery. Surrett is under a $200,000 bond and is currently in the Buncombe County Detention Facility.
Warrants say Surrett “kidnapped the victim and tried to force her to have sex against her will”.  Surrett was arrested Wednesday, January 16th. The arrest report says the arrest took place at 60 Court Plaza which is the address for the Buncombe County Magistrate’s Office. A source said Surrett was taken into custody at the scene.
A source, who asked to remain anonymous, said that Coty Surrett was on work release and lived at the Craggy Correctional Facility where he only had approximately 100 more days to serve out a prior sentence. Jerry Higgins of the Craggy Correctional Facility confirmed Surrett does, in fact, live at the correctional facility. Higgins said, “Mr. Surrett was due to be released on May 16th.”
The source said that Cory Surrett was working for a landscaping company in the Avery’s Creek area. The source said, “He was laying sod in the New Winsor Autry neighborhood next to the Averys Creek Community Center. He told the woman the porta potty was full and needed to use the bathroom.”
The source tells the Leader when Surrett came out of the bathroom he allegedly exposed himself to the woman and forced himself on her, but the woman talked him out of it.  The source goes on to say, “When her [the woman’s] husband got there he beat the s*** out of that guy. Her husband [allegedly] found duct tape and zip ties in his pockets…He was still beating him when the cops arrived.” Two other anonymous, independent sources confirmed the first source’s details. All wanted to remain anonymous because of their jobs.
A background criminal search of Surrett shows he was as convicted in 2009 for beating an elderly woman with a stick. At the time, he was sentenced to five years in prison. Surrett also had several DWI’s.
