North Carolina – North Carolina is ranked 28th in the nation as the safest state for seniors according to a new study. The country has a record number of people 65 and older, nearly 50 million. The golden years should be filled with safety and security but that is not the reality for many.
In fact, the New York Times reported that a record number of seniors over 65 have filed for bankruptcy as people live longer and recessions have caused retirement accounts to vanish. Additionally, too many seniors are living in poverty and are victims of fraud and violence.
Iowa was determined to be the best for senior citizens in our ranking, while, pretty ironically, coming in as the worst state to retire in is the retirement state itself, Florida. For a map and to dig a little deeper into the numbers and rankings for the best and worst states just click here.
The study analyzed the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau in five categories: fraud, housing costs, 65+ population living in poverty, violent-injury deaths among 65+, and 65+ living alone as percentage of state’s population.
