Mitchell County – Friday’s football match between Erwin High’s Warriors and Mitchell High’s Mountaineers ended in victory for the Leicester team, the final score reading 34 to 21 in favor of Erwin.
The game’s first quarter started slowly for the Warriors, having lost the coin toss. Five minutes into the first quarter of play saw a touchdown for Mitchell High for six points and a successful kick for the extra point making it 7-0.
Erwin High’s first offensive drive saw gains of two first downs and an eventual touchdown, leaving the score tied at seven points. When the Mountaineers took their second turn at offense, a series of missteps led to an interception by Warrior players and another Erwin High touchdown. Their second touchdown was followed by another successful kick, leaving the score at 14-7 in favor of Erwin.
The Warriors managed to eke out another touchdown before the close of the first half but missed the kick, with the score at 20-7.
Stormy weather caused a 30-minute lightning delay after halftime, with both teams running back inside the school. After play resumed, Erwin’s offense made great gains, scoring and making a two-point conversion, leaving the score at 28-7.
